A Season of Golden Light and Long Shadows

Here in the northern hemisphere, there's a particular kind of magic that arrives around late September. The air begins to sharpen, shedding the weight of summer; the year isn't just drawing to a close but turning, in that quiet way it only does when the light starts slanting differently and the leaves give up their summer green for autumn's richer, golden tones.

For some, colder weather (fingers crossed it arrives soon) means retreating indoors. Not everyone welcomes that; plenty of us would rather be outside, chasing the last of the warm days. But this is precisely the season for the opposite instinct. This is the season for staying in, for slowing down, and here at TPC, more than ever, it's puzzle season in full swing. Put on a playlist, pour yourself something warm, and settle in to lose an evening to a thousand (puzzler's piece count choice) tiny cardboard pieces of a good jigsaw puzzle.

And this year, the shelves have given us plenty of new autumn puzzles to choose from. Eurographics' Friendly Scarecrows sets the tone early: a 300-piece scene modest enough to finish in an evening, with all the charm of a fence post and a field. WerkShoppe leaned into texture with Harvest Wreath, a round puzzle that trades the usual straight edges for something a little more unexpected; there's a real shift in rhythm once you're not hunting for corners anymore. eeBoo, meanwhile, brings a bit of Parisian charm to the season with Paris in Autumn, a softly illustrated cityscape puzzle that carries all the same golden warmth without leaving the countryside behind entirely.

Some of this year's fall puzzles lean more artistic than literal. Galison's Autumn Square captures a market stall overflowing with pumpkins and apples in their signature illustrated style; New York Puzzle Company's #fallstyle takes a more editorial approach to the season, moody and modern all at once. Villager's Quebec City rounds this out with something more grounded: a foliage-draped cityscape puzzle that trades whimsy for a genuine sense of place. And if you'd rather puzzle something a little more playful, WEVE's Hide and Seek turns the season into a small game of its own. See how quickly you spot what's tucked into the scene.

Then, somewhere around the middle of October, the season turns again. We love that it does. The pumpkins grow a little more sinister, the porches a little more elaborate, and cozy gives way to something spookier. This year, the shelf waiting for it is a genuinely varied collection of Halloween puzzles. SunsOut's Candy Thieves keeps things bright and illustrated, more costume party than haunting, while Galison brings back Michael Storrings for Halloween Parade, carrying that same nostalgic, slightly theatrical charm his work is known for. New York Puzzle Company leans further into atmosphere with Old Haunts, a moodier, more shadowed jigsaw puzzle for anyone who wants their puzzle night to feel a little unsettled.

WerkShoppe, unsurprisingly, brought their usual wit to the season with their Creep It Real puzzle set: two 250-piece puzzles in one box, a fun one to split across an evening or two. eeBoo takes the elegant route with Alchemist's Masquerade, a lavish, mysterious masked ball rendered in rich detail, with swirling gowns, moonlit gardens glimpsed through arched windows, and enough hidden corners to reward a slow, careful solve. Vermont Christmas Company, a brand we'd normally associate with a very different holiday altogether, surprised us this year with Witch's Magic, an advent-calendar-style puzzle set that marks their first real step into Halloween territory. And Cloudberries brings a bold, graphic take on the season with their aptly-named Halloween, a 1000-piece puzzle that leans into color and pattern rather than atmosphere. Rounding things out, 1Canoe2's Spooky Sweets brings their signature paper-goods aesthetic to a candy-drenched scene that's as sweet as it is spooky.

And maybe that's the whole point of this stretch of the year. It doesn't ask you to pick a side: cozy or spooky, city or countryside, golden light or long shadow.
