Puzzle Sets, Collector's Editions, and Advent Calendars You Might Be Missing

Most people think of a puzzle as one box, one image, one long project that lives on the table for a week or a month depending on how ambitious the day feels. And that's the classic format; there's nothing wrong with it. But there's a whole other side of the jigsaw puzzle world that flips that idea completely: multi-pack puzzles. Instead of one big commitment, you get several smaller ones bundled together, and depending on the set, that bundling can mean a few genuinely different things.

Start with mini puzzle collector's sets. These are exactly what they sound like: a handful of mini puzzles, usually somewhere around 80 to 100 pieces each, packaged together around a shared theme. Think of it less as one giant entree and more as a sampler platter. Cat Mini Puzzle Collector's Set is a good example of the format done well: six different New Yorker magazine cat covers, each turned into its own 100 piece mini puzzle, all packed into one keepsake box. Instead of committing to a single illustration, you get six, spanning decades of New Yorker cover art, and six separate finish lines tend to keep an evening far more interesting than one long build. Once they're done, they're small enough to frame and hang as a set too, which is a nice bonus.

Some brands take the idea a step further and theme a set around a specific illustrator rather than a subject, so every puzzle in the box is different but shares one consistent visual voice. Magnolia and Reverie both do this particularly well. Magnolia's Kat Fedora (#1) set gathers four 260 piece puzzles from a single artist, all living in the same dreamy, moonlit, fantasy forest world: cozy reading nooks, glowing forest portals, girls standing beneath full moons with bear companions for company. Their Inna Korneeva set follows the same four-puzzle format with an entirely different energy, all city and travel scenes: a Lisbon street with a yellow tram, a packed Broadway crowd, a cozy neighborhood bar, a European alley strung with laundry lines and a cat waiting below a turquoise door.

On the smaller end of things, Reverie's Witchy Vibes set brings the same idea down to four 99 piece minis, all illustrated by Brittany Keller, each one its own small witch character study: a record shop witch with her cat, a silhouette against a full moon, a sunflower field witch, a moody harvest moon stroll. Four scenes, one unmistakable style running through all of them.

There's a version of this idea that swaps a single illustrator for an entire gallery instead. Eurographics' Fine Art Christmas Advent Calendar is 24 individually boxed 50 piece minis, each one a different iconic painting: Starry Night, the Mona Lisa, and other instantly recognizable masterworks reimagined as a bite sized daily puzzle. Instead of one artist's voice carrying the whole set, it's an entire art history crash course, one small canvas a day. Same underlying idea as Kat Fedora or Inna Korneeva, just trading one artist's world for a rotating gallery.

If someone's favorite puzzle artist is already known, gifting an entire set built around that one person's work lands differently than a single random puzzle ever could. And if their favorite isn't obvious yet, checking which illustrator they follow on Instagram is usually the fastest way to find out; most of these artists post process work and behind the scenes content, so it's an easy scroll to confirm before buying.

If themed collector's sets and artist-specific bundles are the kind of gift worth coming back to, the full Multi-Pack Puzzles collection has plenty more of them.

Then there's the format that's become genuinely popular over the last few years: puzzle advent calendars. Same idea as a traditional advent calendar, except instead of chocolate or tiny toys behind each door, there's a mini puzzle waiting. Open one a day, piece it together, and let the small seasonal ritual build over the course of the month. New Yorker Advent Calendar, 2nd Edition is a strong entry point here: twenty-four individually boxed 100 piece minis, each one a classic New Yorker cover with a holiday twist, snowy city streets, Santa antics, cozy family scenes, reindeer games. If the Cat Mini Puzzle Collector's Set caught your eye earlier, this is basically its holiday sized cousin: the same New Yorker cover art energy, just wrapped in a full December countdown instead of six standalone minis.

For anyone who wants to take the countdown concept further, Cloudberries' 12 Days of Christmas Mystery Puzzle is a genuinely different animal. Instead of twenty-four separate minis, it's one single 1000 piece puzzle split across twelve numbered boxes, and nobody knows what the finished image looks like until the very last box opens, not even us here at TPC. One box a day, one section pieced together at a time, and the full reveal only happens once all twelve sections come together. Part puzzle, part advent calendar, part genuine mystery.

Advent calendars don't have to be a December only concept either, which is exactly what Reverie's The Witch's Bookshelf Advent Calendar proves for Halloween. Thirteen mini puzzles, each one styled to look like a book pulled straight off a witch's personal shelf: spell books, potion cookbooks, stargazing atlases, all wrapped in individually colored mini boxes designed to look like book spines lined up in a row. A genuinely creative twist on the countdown format, and proof the concept was never locked to Christmas at all.

And if the countdown format has you hooked, the full Advent Calendars collection has several more ways to count down, whether it's toward the holidays or toward Halloween.

This is also one of the best kept secrets about multi-pack puzzles: because each mini in a set is individually sized and often individually boxed, the whole set doesn't have to go to just one person. A collector's set of six minis can just as easily become six small stocking stuffers instead of one big gift, stretching a single fifty to sixty five dollar purchase across an entire family rather than just one recipient. It might be one of the most efficient ways to handle holiday gifting for a group of puzzle lovers without buying six separate full sized puzzles.

So for anyone who's only ever puzzled the traditional way, one box, one image, a multi-pack jigsaw puzzle is worth a try. Whether it's a themed collector's set, an artist specific bundle, a daily countdown calendar, or a full blown mystery reveal, there's a format here for nearly every kind of puzzler, and every kind of gift giving occasion too.
