Around him the crowd assembles in Rodriguez's warm, graphic style: a man in a flat cap, a woman with platinum hair and round headphones, a punk with a vivid red mohawk, an elderly woman in round glasses, a man in a white fedora, a woman with braids, a baby with a pacifier tucked into a carrier, someone toting an I ♥ NY bag, a man in a Yankees cap, and a small dog riding along unbothered. Two pigeons perch on the New Yorker masthead above it all.

Rodriguez chose the subway deliberately — it was the setting that best captured how Mamdani campaigned, out among New Yorkers rather than above them, riding with taxi drivers, visiting bodegas, dancing and laughing and showing the city he was one of them.
